Turmeric and CBD: Health Benefits of Turmeric and Curcumin with CBD

Turmeric and curcumin— the super supplement?

At Lucky Elk, we’ve just released a new line of herbal-infused tinctures. Not only are these full spectrum CBD drops great for your health, but they taste delicious without any added terpenes. Personally, turmeric has always been one of my favorite flavors, so of course the first tincture we’re going to discuss is the Turmeric-Infusion with 1500 mg of CBD.

What is curcumin?

Curcumin is the primary active ingredient in turmeric. Many studies have shown that consuming turmeric is beneficial for your body and brain. These health properties are largely attributed to turmeric’s curcumin content.

What are the health benefits of turmeric and curcumin?

Let’s examine five ways that turmeric and curcumin can be used to improve your health:

  1. Anti-inflammatory: Curcumin is a powerful anti-inflammatory, making it a natural medicine in the fight against many common health conditions. Modern science links chronic low-level inflammation with heart disease, cancer, metabolic syndrome, and Alzheimer’s disease.
  2. Anti-oxidant: Curcumin is also a strong anti-oxidant, meaning that it protects your body from free radicals while reducing the effects of aging. Due to its chemical structure, curcumin neutralizes free radicals and even stimulates other anti-oxidants in your body.
  3. Neural activity: Curcumin stimulates your brain’s production of a hormone called BDNF. Decreased levels of this protein (BDNF) are attributed to many brain diseases, such as depression and Alzheimer’s. By increasing the levels of BDNF in your brain, curcumin may delay or even reverse neural damage. Some studies suggest that curcumin boosts memory and attention.
  4. Heart health: Curcumin is believed to reverse the heart disease process by improving the function of your endothelium, the linings of your blood vessels. In a study of 121 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery, participants were given either a placebo or 4 grams of curcumin per day (both before and after surgery.) The group that received the curcumin had a 65% decreased risk of heart attack!
  5. Cancer Fighter: Curcumin has been studied as a way to treat cancer. It’s been shown to fight off cancerous cells while reducing new blood vessels in tumors and effectively stopping the spread of cancer. There is also evidence that curcumin can be used as a cancer preventative.

Turmeric and Curcumin plus CBD

Turmeric and curcumin are incredibly potent plant medicine, but getting their full effects isn’t always easy. To maximize the health properties of these superfoods, there are a few things you should do first.

How to increase bioavailability of turmeric and curcumin

The curcumin content of turmeric is only about 3% by weight. True, it’s the main active ingredient, but curcumin just isn’t very abundant in raw turmeric. When you use turmeric as a supplement, however, you’re getting concentrated doses of curcumin—a much more effective way to benefit from its amazing properties.

Curcumin is difficult to absorb into your bloodstream. In other words, it has low bioavailability. There are a few ways to naturally increase your body’s absorption of curcumin:

  1. black pepper contains piperine, a bioactive compound that enhances absorption of curcumin by 2000%
  2. curcumin is fat soluble, which means that it becomes more easily absorbed after binding with an oil

To increase the bioavailability of curcumin, Lucky Elk’s Turmeric CBD Drops use a high concentration of curcumin extract in conjunction with a high-grade, organic MCT oil.

Turmeric and CBD

When you examine the healing properties of turmeric and curcumin, another natural substance might come to mind, namely CBD! That’s right, these medicinal compounds share many medicinal benefits. They also share another important quality: little to no undesirable side-effects. At Lucky Elk, we’ve decided to pair two of nature’s greatest super supplements into one awesome tincture. Around the farm, it’s our daily dose. Try it, and it might become yours, too.

Turmeric Cold Infusion

Most people don’t realize that cooking turmeric negates almost all of its health properties!

What happens when you cook turmeric?

Curcumin is highly volatile. When heated, even at moderate temperatures, curcumin evaporates. Sure, your turmeric curry might taste delicious (and who doesn’t love that beautiful golden color?) but you’re not getting much benefit from eating it! So instead of cooking turmeric, you should probably consume it in a smoothie, juice, or cold-extracted tincture.

Turmeric Cold Infusion

At Lucky Elk, we’ve crafted a Cold Infusion process to extract concentrated amounts of curcumin without applying any heat. It takes a few weeks in our labs (and a lot of patient mixing,) but we think the results are well worth it. We never heat the turmeric, which means that each bottle of Turmeric CBD Drops contains curcumin that’s naturally potent in anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, heart and brain function promoting, and cancer fighting qualities!
